By: Syed Naqvi Fatima Mahwish International Women’s Day is now an official holiday in China, Armenia, Russia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bulgaria, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Macedonia, Moldova, Mongolia, Tajikistan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan and Vietnam. The tradition sees men about their mothers, wives, lovers, colleagues, etc with flowers and small gifts. In some countries, the International Women’s Day has the same status as Mother’s Day where children give small presents to their mothers and grandmothers. The new millennium has seen significant changes and a shift in the attitudes of both women and society thinks about women’s equality and emancipation. Many of the younger generation feel that ‘all the battles won for women’ while many feminists from the 1970s know only too well longevity and ingrained complexity of patriarchy. With more women in the boardroom, greater equality in legislative rights, and increase the critical mass of women’s visibility as impressive role models in all aspects of life, one might think that women have achieved true equality. unfortunate fact is that women are still not paid equally to their male counterparts, women are still not present in equal numbers in business or politics, and globally women’s education, health and violence against them is worse than for men. However, great progress has been made. We have female astronauts and prime ministers, school girls welcome to the university, women can work and have a family, and women have a choice. And so the tone and character of the International Women’s Day over the past few years, moved from a negative reminder to celebrate the positive. Annually on 8 March, thousands of events taking place around the world to inspire women and celebrate accomplishments. global network of rich and diverse local activity connects women around the world ranging from political rallies, business conferences, government activities and networking events through local women’s groups, craft markets, theatric performances, fashion parades and more. Many global companies have also begun to more actively support the International Women’s Day by running their own internal events and the promotion of external borders. For example giant Google eighth March search engine and the media some years, despite changes logo on its global search pages. Year after year, the International Women’s Day certainly growing in status. The United States and even determines the whole month of March as “Women’s History Month.” So make a difference, think globally and act locally! Make everyday International Women’s Day.
